Queen of the Night- Exotic Flower

You all would have seen this photo in my previous post called photo of the day . I had taken this photo at my apartment in Bangalore.


When I posted the photo, I did not know what flower it was. So I have been showing around wanting to know the name of the flower.

I was showing this picture to my mother and she identified the name of the flower to be Brahma Kamal flower. This flower is such a seasonal flower that it blooms in Mid monsoon ( July – August). 


This picture is  of Brahma Kamal flower, I got to see this flower at my Sister in laws house. When I showed her the above picture she mentioned that, at her house she had a single bud and it was waiting to bloom.  We decided to go and check out the flower around 10 pm, and to our surprise the flowers was in full bloom. 


 The flower was a beautiful white in color. This flower blooms only once and in the night. The next day morning it closes like the picture, I have below.


Botanical name : Saussurea Obvallata

India name : Brahma Kamal Flower

                        Nishagandhi or Queen of the night

 

Saussurea Obvallata is a species of flowering plant. Its is native to the Himalayas and Uttarakhand, India. In the Himalayas it is found at an altitude of around 4500 m.This plant is a Mythological plant of India.
